We are a Reform Jewish Congregation which strives to create a spiritually, socially, and geographically diverse community. We welcome everyone–interfaith couples, people exploring their Jewish roots, those considering conversion to Judaism, visitors, and non-members–to all services and special events.



Weekly services

Shabbat Services are held each Friday evening. Services will begin promptly at 7:30, with the exception of the 4th Friday on which they will begin at 6:30 to accommodate for young families and those traveling from afar.

Saturday Torah study is held at 9:30 am on the third Saturday of the Month, and a Torah Service is held at 10:00 am on the fourth Saturday.

Our synagogue

We are located at 183 French St. in Bangor Maine. Ample parking is available on both sides of the street, though there is a "No Park­ing" zone immediately in front of the steps leading into the build­ing. The driveway side-entrance has fewer steps. A handicap-access ramp is located at the end of the driveway.

A brief history for our 25th anniversary


Congregation Beth El was born in the Spring of 1981 from the vision of five families who believed that the time was right for a rebirth of a Reform presence in eastern Maine. An earlier Beth El had existed in Bangor forty years before, but had been subsumed under Congregation Beth Israel and lost its reform identity. The families placed a small advertisement in the Jewish Community Council Newsletter announcing an open meeting for those who were interested in sharing their thoughts about establishing a Reform congregation in the area.  The response was powerful and, within a very short time, there were twenty-five families embarking on the journey of developing a reform synagogue together.
